The Story of CrossFit Moncton

It’s been exactly two years since I did my first CrossFit workout. Here is the story of how CrossFit Moncton came to be…

I was teaching Phys Ed at Tantramar in 2006. On the night of Parent-Teacher interviews, a parent, who was also an RCMP officer, gave me a link to a website. He said it was filled with workouts that I could possibly use with my students. I think I lost the paper that had the link and completely forgot about it.

About a month later, his son, Justin, asked if I checked out the CrossFit site. I hadn’t, so we went to my computer after school and saw it was a workout called the Filthy Fifties. 500 reps? Really?! I had some spare time, so Justin and I gave it a shot.

Box jumps, no sweat! Jumping pull-ups, piece of cake. Dumbbell swings, ok, this is starting to suck. Walking lunges…they have to be with weights…let’s try 50#’s in each arm…ahhh, this is bad! Anyway, I managed to get to the back extensions before my body called it quits.

I was hooked!

I continued doing the workouts on the main site and tracking my progress. On December 14, 2006, my CrossFit Total was a lowly 568…and that was using a Smith machine for the squats! Now, I’m up to 720. In two months, I gained 10 pounds of muscle. This stuff is potent.

Interest was sparked and I began my certifications to become a personal trainer in 2007. That’s where I met Jeanette Pearson. We were on break during a course and somehow found out that we each did CrossFit. Over the lunch break, we did a workout at NuBody’s and got quite a few stares. This was one girl that knew how to workout! She planted a seed by mentioning the idea of CrossFit Moncton. I smiled.

When I found out about the CrossFit in Fredericton, I headed down to see what a REAL CrossFit gym was like. I think the workout was Fight Gone Bad. And boy was it bad! Since meeting Jodi and Anthony Bainbridge, they have been an incredible resource for me and have answered my many questions about running a CrossFit gym. They are two, very impressive people.

The next step was affiliation. I needed to go to a CrossFit certification, so I checked the main site everyday for one that was fairly close. MAINE! That’s about as close as it comes! I drove down with Janine Daigle, who used to be a Crossfitter in Moncton, but has since moved to Bathurst (and opened CrossFit Bathurst). The weekend course was amazing and on June 22, 2008, I was a CrossFit certified trainer. My affiliation application went through quickly, got insurance, did up a business plan, and held the inaugural CrossFit Moncton workout in the park at Queen E. school playground on July 5, 2008. There were 20 participants and lots of supporters.

It was all happening so fast. It was real.

I had over 75 people come out for workouts in the park over the course of the summer. As summer was drawing to an end, it was starting to get dark and cold. I needed a space before the snow fell. I spent countless hours with the help of Jeanette looking for an ideal location. It was a lot harder than expected. After seeing MANY unsuitable spaces, 94 Rideout St. was found. It was a large room (not quite empty – filled with kayak building materials and other thingamajigs), with 10 foot ceilings. I had freedom to transform the room however I wanted to. Perfect!

Getting a loan proved to be quite the task, but after securing some money from the bank, I filled the room rather quickly with CrossFit equipment. Some of the people from the summer workouts joined the gym, new members are trickling in and business is growing.

So there you have it. The story of how CrossFit Moncton came to be. I want to thank everyone who’s helped, supported, motivated, and encouraged me to get where I am today. I am very grateful!

Oh ya, I almost forgot. The workout of the day is The Filthy Fifties.

  2. Good write-up Kevin!
I didn’t know all the story behind Crossfit Moncton…really interesting to see how fast you started CFmoncton.

I am one of them that trained in the park during the summer and continued in the gym.
I enjoyed training in the park during the summer it was a great idea to start up your Crossfit and get some people to know what it is.

I really appriciate the work you guys did to find a spot inside and having it setup so we can do the WOD.

I will always be there to support CFmoncton….as long as I live in Moncton! 😀

  3. congrats kevin, everything that i’ve seen about you and CFM just reinforces the notion that you will go a long way with this, and make yourself and so many others stronger, more confident and able in the process (and not just in the gym).

on a side note, i remember the day that jeanette found out you CFed too – she was so excited to find another fellow CFer.

i’ve been CFing for about a year now (found out through and trained with jeanette by a lovely, random twist of fate), and the 50s are one of my favorites – i love the long, drawn out ones!

  4. Congrats Kevin. It is so nice to hear the whole story. Fantastic accomplishments. I’m sure you will succeed with everything you attempt. You’re a great instructor/coach, especially with keeping us in check with our form; pushing us that last bit to finish the w/o……love it.

The Filthy Fifties, awesome. This is a w/o that I have wanted to do for sometime, I can’t wait till tonight.

  5. As a mother, I am proud of your accomplishment. As an older Crossfitter, I can;t believe the difference in my energy levels. You push me hard and I see the results. Thanks for the pain. Does that aound crazy or what?

    Post-workout: secret yummy meeting 😉

Krista and Julie both killed this one tonight. I wish I could say I wasn’t jealous, but I am. Step away from the ego, Jeanette… Step away from the ego.

  9. Great effort tonight everyone…a bunch of PR and a great time for Julie!

Everyone did some awesome time on the 50’s.

My WOD was not the same as the others, since I am not fully recovered.

    10 rounds of:
    10 pullups
    10 ring dips
    10 pushups.

    Time: 27:27

The ring dips were brutal. The first round was easy but the rest of the the WOD was bad! 🙂

  10. For time:

    50 Box Jumps 24″
    50 Jumping Pull-ups
50 Kettle Bell swings, 1 pood
    50 Walking Lunges
    50 Knees to Elbows
    50 Push Press 45#
    50 Back Extensions 10#
    50 Wall Ball Shots 14#
    50 Burpees
    50 Double Unders

    Time: 34:10
This was my first 50’s…..I really liked this w/o. It only started to suck at the wall balls. 1st time for 24″ box jumps and I did all double unders (finally can do them).
    See you tomorrow.

  11. Great work everyone! Sorry I missed it(in Halifax) but knee is still VERY sore…swollen and painful to touch. Couple days off should be good for it 🙂

  12. Hey. I am in NB as well,a police officer, and have been crossfiting for almost 2 years, and I’m going to get certified in Aug this year.
I am ambitious and want to seek affiliation immediately. The only problem, not much knowledge in area of business proposals and business plans.
Any help or template offered would be greatly appreciated.
