Role Models

Remember, if you’re on a wait list, you can still do a ‘wait list’ workout at the gym.

I posted a picture on Facebook a few days ago that showed all the babies and kids during the 8:30 class. The picture below was on the CrossFit.com main site. What do you think that little girl is thinking? She stopped dead in her tracks with her mouth wide open. I don’t know if one of those women is her mom, but either way, what a great group of role models. Just like all the members at our gym, when they have their little ones with them.

Little girls get bombarded with the message that skinny is cool and something to strive for. Screw that! Soccer mom’s that can rip out pull-ups are freaking awesome! One of our members told me she caught her son doing overhead squats with a crowbar. Another member looked out the window and saw her kid doing pushups because he missed the net in road hockey. And this kid  has an amazing squat, probably because he sees his mom doing them all the time.

Monkey see, monkey do. There’s a lot of truth to it.

I’m happy to see you bring your kids to the gym. You are showing them that being strong and fit is important. You are great role models!

    1. I have to admit the jumper cables and ping pong balls threw me off at first but it was fun!

  1. I have an ENORMOUS amount of respect for busy parents who stay fit. They are incredibly tired and busy at all times and yet make it a priority to take care of themselves. To me that shows a great deal of self respect.
You can tell your kids all you want about taking care of themselves and putting themselves first but you’ll only effectively teach them that if you actually do it. Your children will learn how to take care of themselves because you DO it, not because you tell them to.

    1. Thanks Amanda! I needed to hear this! Sometimes as a mom I feel guilty for putting me first but you’re right.
Love the post Kevin! We don’t realize how much impact our actions have on children. I think it’s great that you are so open to having parents bring our kids to watch. Awesome to see the pics of mom’s with their young babies in the playpen! 🙂

  2. Love, love, love today’s post.

If there is one thing I have learned over the years as a parent (and I am still learning every day) is that kids do what they “see”, and not necessarily what they are “told”. I will admit I deal with some guilt every now and then when I bring the kids to the gym; feeling selfish and all…BUT then I realize that its a positive environment for them, with lots of great role models inside those 4 walls at CFM.

I love that my kids question whether certain foods are healthy or not. I love that they see how important physical acitivity is. I love that they witness people face and conquer challenges every day at CFM. I love that the day after we did Deck of Death, my 8 year old found a deck of cards at home and started his own version….and finished the deck! I could go on, but you get the point. Thanks for welcoming our children to CFM Kevin. Its going to be awesome when you and Jo have your own little one there. 🙂

    1. Awesome. Yes! I love that my 6 year old beat me at one of the burpee member challenges 🙂

  3. I can totally relate to Lora’s post!

I find it very exciting that my 3 boys not only can talk about CrossFit using terms like “AMRAP” and “WOD”, but also are learning many proper techniques for exercising and performing everyday functions. I was in garage and my youngest was reminding to use “Angry Gorilla Back” so I did not get hurt. The CrossFit Kids program at CrossFit Moncton is absolutely fantastic. Even though our schedules have been very challenging as of late the kids are anxious to get back and having fun.

I hope, and think that my kids know that exercise is important and they understand that exercise and eating well is important, and that strength comes from hard work. I heard my middle guy telling his friend “Well… MY Dad can Overhead Squat ME”. I kind of chuckled, but I really realised that he is watching what I am doing and understands there is value in it.

Finding the time to get to be active yourself is challenging sometimes with 3 active kids, but my wife and I have made it a part of our lives and I really think that our kids will be better for it as well.

The little kids you CrossFit Moncton Moms are taking to the box with you will grow up with such a great outlook on exercise, eating and dedication because of all the hard work you are doing! When I see babies and little ones around I feel a great sense of admiration for the parents that are “finding a way” to make it all work, and being great role models while doing it!

Hats off to Kevin and Jo for providing such a great environment!

  4. I have always preferred gyms that are family oriented. I love seeing young children coming with their parents to watch or even better the older children working out with their parents. I admire all the young parents who are working hard at staying healthy at this very busy time in their lives.
I love CFMs acceptance of all age groups and acceptance of all people.
PS. I also love that fur babies can visit.

  5. Heather (Mum)

I love all the babies. Can’t wait to see Kevin and Jo’s baby there. I hope I can put the baby down long enough to actually do the Wods.

  6. Being a full-time single mom, it allows me to be able to fit in the gym 5 days a week, but to be honest it keeps accountable, I dont have an excuse that I cant find a sitter for the kids. Its nice to hear other CF members question where my kids are, when they are not with me, or when they are include in WOD activities. (running).
CF has made a life style change on both my kids, Ali will read labels on food and Aidan questions every morning what the WOD is. Thank you for making my family apart of your family.

  7. on a side note…..this not knowing todays WOD is making me very anxious! It has messed up my routine and I dont know how to dress…. lol

Not really sure how I feel about the ‘surprise’ but I get that it’s a good mental practice for the Hopper… so it’s all good.

  19. I wouldn’t be able to do this if I couldn’t bring my children and for that I am so grateful!

  20. Practiced cleans. All I’ve got to say about that is: wtf.

    WOD rx’d: 14:40.

    Tough one!

    1. I think you think your cleans are worse than they really are. You know what to do. You are really good at “seeing” movement. Get out ‘Coaches Eye’ and pick it apart. I’m sure its an easy fix. Just 4 little parts: start, pick up, extension, catch. 🙂

      1. No, they’re bad. I can FEEL that they’re bad. I do need to see a video, you’re right. I will get someone to take one this week.

  36. It is funny how sometimes things work out just perfect. Just this morning I was starting to question my decision to start bringing the boys with me; Declan had been fussy the last few workouts and Owen asks A LOT OF QUESTIONS. I woke up, checked my email to see what today’s WOD was. After reading what Kevin wrote, I no longer cared that I had no idea what the WOD was, but I definitely had confirmation that I was doing the right thing.

Thank you to everyone else who supports us bringing our kids! Without the community being ok with it, there is no way I would be able to get to the gym during the summer, bringing them makes it possible.
