“Put on your own oxygen mask before assisting someone else”
If you’ve been on a flight before, you may have heard the flight attendant say this (or maybe you slept through it). It’s probably one of the most important things they go over.
If you can’t breathe, and you pass out, you can’t help anyone. Save yourself first, then worry about others.
If that’s true on an airplane, why is it so hard to do in our households? Why do we always put others before ourselves?
Because you’re a wife/husband? Because you’re a mom/dad? Because you’re a best friend?
Think about this. When you feel at the top of your game, everything is dialled in, aren’t you a better spouse, parent, and friend? Absolutely!
So this is your permission to be selfish. Not forever. Just until you get your shit together. Get help with your nutrition. Commit to a consistent workout schedule. Decide that you are important and you deserve to be better. Put your oxygen mask on FIRST, so then you can help others.
The greatest gift you can give somebody is your own personal development. I used to say, “If you will take care of me, I will take care of you. “Now I say, I will take care of me for you, if you will take care of you for me.
