In loving memory…

I met Marc for the first time on January 31st, 2009 – New Years Eve at his basement apartment. I had no plans that night and Pierre invited to join him. When I walked through the door, I was greeted by a burly young man with his hand outstretched. After a firm handshake and a warm hello, I felt at home. He introduced me to everyone at the party and made me feel welcomed. This was a trait that carried with him for the length of time that I knew him.

February 1st, Marc started his Fundamentals. He was a natural and did it in 2 sessions. After giving him is login information for the site, he told me he couldn’t wait for his first class. A few days later, on February 4th, he was registered for the 6:30pm class – and he was the ONLY person in it. It didn’t matter to him. He was bouncing off the walls with excitement. He even posted his results on his first day!

That passion for CrossFit stuck with him. On Dec.18th, 2010, Marc traveled to Boston to take his CrossFit Level 1 certification. And so began his career as a CrossFit Coach.

Members at the gym always looked forward to having him as a coach. They knew they would be watched, supported, corrected, encouraged and loved. He embodied the values of CrossFit and passed it down to anyone that would listen (and sometimes to those who didn’t want to listen).

Marc was always there to help. Jo and I would come back from a trip, only to find out Marc cleaned the whole gym – just because. He was a selfless leader. Which is why I chose him to stand by me at the alter when I married my wife. I knew he would have my back no matter what happened. He was a true friend.

Marc, if you are looking down, I’m sorry. I feel so bad for losing touch with you over the last year. I love you like a brother. I will do everything in my power to make sure your spirit lives on in this world. Your spirit will live on within me. It will live on within every person you ever knew. Thank you for all you’ve done.

Join us today in honouring the life of Marc Hebert. The gym is open to EVERYONE tomorrow. CrossFitters, friends, family, anyone that knew Marc are all welcome. We will be there from 6-9:30am and 3:15-7:30pm.

  1. Marc sounds like he was an amazing person – someone to look up to and strive to be like. I am sorry to hear about your loss.

  2. I am sorry for your loss Kevin and Jo!
I did not know Marc, but from what I have read and heard he was an outstanding guy and someone we could all strive to be a little more like! It was nice to see all the great support with the amount of people at the box this am. Nice to see some new faces. Great work this morning everyone. I hope I did this Wod a little justice (I really tried for sub 5 Kevin).

That was tougher than expected. I think I heard Marc cheering us while I was trying to hold on to the pullups or pump out another burpee. It sure helped to think of him while going through the motions. I also didnt expect to break down and start bawling after I was done… makes you realise how strong the Crossfit bonds are.

My condolences to Stephanie and all of Marc’s friends and family.

  5. Beautifully written Kevin xo. He was an amazing guy and had an impact on all our lives in so many ways.

Marc was one of the reasons I stuck with CrossFit in the beginning, and I was privileged to have met him. RIP

  7. I’ll share a little of what I wrote down in the book for my cashout…

Back when I first started I was amazed by what some of the big dogs were able to do Crossfit-wise, guys like Kevin, Pierre, Patrick, Ed, and of course Marc. His energy and will to give everything in a WOD was really contagious. Marc had that way of making you feel like you could backsquat 700# or get 57 rounds on “Cindy”.

So many good times to remember!

  8. Great loss for the Comunity!! My thoughts and prayers are filled with everyone’s sorrow and hope that we just keep remembering Marc for all the wonderful memories he left!

  10. Thank you for sharing this story with us Kevin. I am sure you have many happy memories of Marc that you hold close to your heart; I hope that they will bring you strength and comfort in the days, weeks and months to come. Marc was as wonderful man, taken from us too soon. I will never forget his huge, welcoming smile. He lit up every room he entered and his joy and enthusiasm were contagious. He will be missed by so many….Thank you for opening the gym today in his honour.

  11. Thank you SO much Kevin and Joanna for opening your doors and hearts today for all that knew and were touched by Marc’s spirit. My deepest gratitude!

I had a hard time pulling myself away from CFM this morning, wanting to stay and cheer on all my fellow MCFers and CFMers as they poured out their hearts to celebrate such a tremendous coach, friend, mentor and brother. I’m confident that Marc is proud of us all for the support we give each other in a time of such shock and grief.

Thank you Kevin and Joanna. I know how hard this is for you. My heart breaks for Stephanie, Marc’s family and his friends. A truly great man has left us way too soon.

  14. I did not know Marc, but it is always tragic when we lose someone so young. This morning was a fitting tribute and a very healthy way for people to come together in support of each other during a difficult time. I was left all on the mat this morning. With every passing rep, I could hear Marc say, “one more rep, you got this”. As I took my first swig of water before the 15 pull ups, I heard him yell, “breaks are for losers!”. I looked up at the ceiling and told him, “shut up, I got this!”. Forever in my heart, may you always motivate me to do my best and never give up. I miss you bro!

  16. Beautifully written… I wish I could be there today with you guys but Croatia is a little far ! My heart and thoughts are with you. Miss you guys…

  23. Sorry for the loss of your friend, guys. Kevin, your heart-felt tribute speaks volumes about what a fine man Marc was, as well as the kind of real man you are, one that I have come to appreciate so very much over the past few years. We all should have such a great friend in our lives.

  24. Thank you CFM for opening your door to the Crossfit community!!!
It was special to do this WOD at the Gym where Marc started. Marc was a mentor for a lot of people! I will miss him a lot, but I won’t stop doing what I love Crossfit!!! And I will give one more Reps for him at every WOD!!!

  26. I have struggled with what to post today, or whether to post anything at all. I started with writing myself a nearly 1000 word ‘essay’ on what I’ve been feeling the last couple days in hopes it would help me to figure out how to say what Marc meant to me (and Kevin) and how this tragedy has affected us and those of you around us. I’m not sure if it helped me or just made me cry more but I’ll ramble on here in the hopes I can express it to you.

As you read in Kevin’s post Marc developed a passion for CrossFit early on. I remember helping Kevin ‘train’ him to be a coach and all the time thinking that he would be amazing at it. We were right. He was amazing, one of our best coaches ever. Marc chose to move on and start Maritime CrossFit, his passion and great coaching eye in tow. MCF members are a testament to this.

More than just a great coach, Marc was one of Kevin’s best friends. We could always count on him anytime we needed anything. Often we would stop by his house just to drop by. He was always happy to see us, welcoming us into his home and sharing his great sense of humor and friendship with us. We have many fond memories of time spent with him that we will always cherish. When we got married Marc stood by Kevin’s side, I will forever have him in my wedding photos as a reminder of what an amazing friend and ‘brother’ he was to Kevin and I.

Sadly, as life’s circumstances change we lost touch with Marc through the past year which I now regret and wish I did more to re-ignite the strong friendship that stood before. We can’t go back and change things, I just hope that Marc now knows that we had wanted to reach out and that we missed him in our lives.

If there is any good to be seen in this it is that Marc (even in passing) can bring people together. Walls that were built up are now crumbling and light is shining through. I am overwhelmed with the amount of support from all over the Maritimes and touched by the reaching out of from our members and MCF members.

Marc, I’m sorry for losing touch and more sorry that I will never get to tell you. I hope you have found peace and are watching over us seeing how much love there is for you here. You will forever be part of our family, we will miss you. I thank you for giving us your enthusiasm for life while you were with us and for bringing us back together in passing. We will make you proud.

    1. Very nice words Jo and Kevin:) and thank you guys so much for opening the gym to the MCF members, it means a lot to everyone, and it just shows what kind of community we have as a whole. It is very strong of you to be doing this as I know you are grieving too. Love you all!

    2. Thank you Joanna and Kevin for letting us know how you are feeling during this very sad time. We care about you guys a lot.

    3. Beautifully written Joanna. My deepest sympathies to you, Kevin, his family, and all the people whose lives he touched.

  27. Marc’s WOD
    Time: 8:31

I’ve never wanted to do a wod less than this one and have struggled all day to make myself post, not knowing what to write. So, for all who knew Marc I’ll borrow what’s written below to say “See you later” and not goodbye.

    We’ve known lots of pleasure,
    At times endured pain,
    We’ve lived in the sunshine
    And walked in the rain.

    But now we’re separated
    And for a time apart,
    But I am not alone
    You’re forever in my heart.

    Death always seems so sudden,
    And it is always sure,
    But what is oft’ forgotten
It is not without a cure.

There may be times you miss me,
I sort of hope you do,
But smile when you think of me,
For I’ll be waiting for you.

Now there’s many things for you to,
And lots of ways to grow,
So get busy, be happy, and live your life,
Miss me, but let me go.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Marc but I felt compelled to do the WOD in his name. With the heavy hearts and raw emotions that I witnessed and felt from those who knew him, I am certain that he was an amazing individual! As Maya Angelou once said: ” a great soul serves everyone all the time, a great soul never dies, it brings us together again and again” With what I witnessed today at the box, he did and does exactly that…..he lives on!!!

Thinking of all his friends and family during this difficult time!

  31. Kevin I’m really proud to be your friend today. You are handling this like a champ. I know you are forgiven. Let this be a new chapter for a new and improved community.

  32. Heather Colleen

The greatest thing we can hope for in this life is to leave a legacy, a lasting testament to who we were, what we loved, and how we lived. Your friend, your mentor, your coach did that for you – and he did it well.

My heart goes out to everyone touched by this tragedy. Heartache goes so much deeper than physical pain…and takes longer to heal. Community is everything right now, and community is built in CrossFit.

  33. I had never met Marc, and I have never even visited Maritime CrossFit. In the 6 months since I’ve joined CrossFit Moncton, however, I’ve seen the dedication and intense hard work it takes to be a leader in the CrossFit community. Based on this, alone, I know that Marc was a person who deserved all the love and respect in the world.

Today, I did a WOD in his honour, and seeing the community come together in solidarity is such a huge part of why I fell in love with CrossFit. In today’s world, we are constantly seeing people pulling away from the community at large. But in one short hour, I saw so many people pouring out their hearts, sharing sweat and tears. No matter who you are, the beauty and the sadness of it all leaves you a little awestruck.

  49. Still trying to take this all in. I’ve had the privilege to know Marc and his great attributes. When ever Elba and I ran into him, whether it be in/outside of crossfit he would have a big smile, firm hand shake and say “Hey guys” followed by a small conversation. Kevin was training Marc to be a Coach when Elba and I went through our fundamentals (only days before he went to Boston). He told me about his struggles with pull-ups and how he needed a band when he first started. That coming from a big guy like Marc was encouraging. Many months later when I finally joined crossfit, it was his coaching that helped me grasp the T2B concept. One of my fondest memories in the box was when he did an unassisted parallette handstand push-up. Fondest memory out side the box was the Buzz Lightyear costume for Halloween. I’m honored to have known you, may you RIP.

  51. I had heard of an Irish wake before but I think what we witnessed tonight was a Crossfit wake!! No better way to honour one of ours!

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Freebird was playing on the radio on my way home after the WOD and it gave me goosebumps! It was a song that had always held a deeper meaning to me and never more than the night that my father died. When I left the hospital and I turned on the car this is what what playing on the radio. I sat in my car and listened, sang along and cried. Since that night 4 years ago (almost to the day actually) when I hear Freebird it’s like a wink from my Dad. And I think Mark winked at me tonight. 😉

    “If I leave here tomorrow
    Would you still remember me?

You all embody the ethos of CrossFit, by cheering and supporting everyone, regardless of where they come from… just like Marc did. It didn’t matter if you were miles ahead or falling far behind, you were all equals in his eyes. I will do my best to exemplify his good nature each and every day. Thank you all for being a part of this special occasion. I appreciate all of the comments, handshakes and hugs. I love you all so much.

Marc, I did the workout unbroken for you buddy. Every time I slowed, I looked at your picture, and you told me “Keep going Kev”. Thank you for your help tonight. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Time – Not sure and really not important today.

Today was about going out there and giving my all to pay my respects to a man who left this world way too soon. Marc will always be remembered in my heart as a man who always made time for the small talk when you run into each other. He was never in too much of a hurry to not take the time to ask how you’ve been. We live in a world today where everyone always seems to be “busy” or in a “hurry” to get somewhere but that was not Marc, he always took the time to talk to you and shake your hand. I will always remember the last time I spoke to him which was 2 weeks ago today. We were both with different people at a local coffee shop but he took the time to stop his conversation to say Hi and ask how i’ve been when I was on my way out and we crossed paths. I didn’t get a chance to know Marc as well as others but the thing I will take away from knowing him is to take the time, even if short, to stop and talk with friends when your paths cross.

  54. WOD: 9:47 I think.

I’m so humbled and proud to be a member of this community. Kevin…thank you for inviting the members of MCF in to join us this week.

I had the privilege of having Marc as a friend and previously, as a coach. I keep trying to write something about what has happened and I can’t. Well I shouldn’t say I can’t – because Marc made me do 10 ‘can’t’ burpees a few times in our day – but I don’t believe I can find any words that would be adequate to describe the loss that the world has just experienced. My heart hurts for him and for those who loved him.

Members of Maritime CrossFit – THANK YOU for joining us today. I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart for your loss.
