Birthday burpees – Good fun? Or cruel and unusual punishment?

(For those that haven’t experienced birthday burpees, if you workout on your birthday, the class does as many burpees as your age while you get to watch and smile)

10-8-6-4-2 reps of:
Overhead squats
Ring Dips

Compare to Dec.6/10

  1. HaHa great question for me today! While I’ll never be as great as Liam and do my own birthday burpees, I would say that even on the 2-birthday-days (thanks Marcel and Ang) I still think that there’s good fun here. Just like everything else, whether goat or favorite move, there’s something powerful in saying “Yeah, I did that.” 🙂

  2. Well, when I first started, I really hated them. Last year I did them for Gerry’s birthday and (jokingly) complained loudly about it to him, I think I said if I had known I was going to be doing all those burpees I would have taken another class. He said: “well you should be thankful that you’re going to be that much healthier after you do all my birthday burpees than the other classes who don’t have to do them.” It was an excellent point, and stuck with me…not because I was doing more exercise than the other classes but because I was lucky to be there and getting healthier by the minute. And I think it sunk in well because it came from Gerry…I was almost 35, he was 57 (I think?) – I realized I needed to just shut up and be thankful for my burpees. 🙂 So I don’t mind them so much anymore. 🙂

  3. I love doing them for other people but feel bad when people have to do them for me (hence why I either say nothing about my birthday or end up working out from home)… Hmmmmm…

    1. Yeah, same here. I always said that I’d never come in on my birthday so that I wouldn’t have to make everyone do the burpees, but I think this year I’m going to come in…I don’t want to switch around my workout days just for that! I wish Kevin didn’t have my birth date…

  5. I remember as a kid the birthday boy got cherry bellies for his birthday from everyone in the room, so turning 13 with 10 kids in the room = 130 smacks on the gut…OUCH and yes kids can be cruel, but I look back and it was fun because I could not wait to give it back.

    Having everyone doing burpees for the crossfit members birthday may not sound like fun, but it pays respect and says congratulations on making a positive choice in life and choosing Crossfit Moncton to better yourself through mind and body. I know some of the workouts are scaled to ones individual capability, but even at scale it will push you more than anything else you have ever done, and if you struggle, everyone working out with you will be there to cheer until your done. So when my birthday comes around, I will be sure to hold my head up high with pride and cheer as I am honored with burpees, but I can’t lie……. inside I will be laughing my ass off.

    I have to agree with Ron. Its a great way to honour someone on their special day….without the calories from cake or the fire hazard of candles (speaking for myself here)….

  9. I like this topic – having celebrated my birthday this week marked by 59 burpees by fellow crossfitters. I felt a mixture of glee and guilt; coupled with thinking on scheduling a class on an unbirthday. There was certainly a measure of “guilty pleasure” watching everyone else sweating the burpees. But tied to that was feeling a tad guilty for being the reason for this extra work – like when the teacher gave the whole class an extra assignment because of something you did.

    Thanks Ron for adding another positive spin to this ” extra exercise” (quoting Marcel).

    I guess ultimately its “good fun” – a fun team building exercise that everyone can share and inflict on the group when it’s their birthday. ( Also a little bit of revenge by the “masters” on the “young bucks”.) just sayin’.

    Note: Amanda brought something I said to her. I had forgotten that I said it to her but it still holds true.
    Maybe I should write this stuff down.

    I really underestimated this WOD! On Aug 24 I did 26 OHS @75# unbroken so I thought this was going to be a walk in the park. Man was I wrong.
    Ring dips I thought were going to be my struggle but they where not.
    Despite all of that, I still loved this WOD! 🙂

  16. Birthday burpees are “A Badge of Honour”. I was pissed last year when my birthday fell on a Sunday; thankfully, this year Ange and I were able to give a class a double dose of “extra fitness”.

    First time doing ring dips in the work out. Couldn’t get over how quickly they tire your shoulders especially with OHS and after having OHS as strength. Happy to cross them off my “never attempted” list. Wonder what’s next?

    Low weight on the OHS cause of injury, felt light pain (pinching) during movement. WOD was done unbroken. Will possibly go down to yellow band next time I do ring dips.
