  1. What makes CrossFit so scary?
Everything is scary but that’s what makes it exciting, fun and rewarding 🙂 When you can accomplish something you previously though was scary you feel pretty good.
    How can we fix that?
Trainers are doing an excellent job of breaking down all those scary things into things we can actually handle and take on and sometimes they see that you can move on to the next level of scary stuff even though you didn’t realize you could and that is SWEET!!! DUDE!

This WOD was scary but we got through it better than expected 🙂

Thanks Kevin! I think Thrusters happened to everyone 😉

    1. I overheard someone say this morning “I thought CrossFit was supposed to get easier”. Nope. No one ever said that. And you wouldn’t want it to get easier. Where’s the fun in that!?

    My Rant
    By Mark DeWolfe

CrossFit isn’t scary…the misconceptions people can convince themselves of are scary. I think people are generally misinformed and quick to make negative judgements about what CrossFit is or isn’t…they have no concept of scaling and exercise as a progression over time. All most people see on the Internet and TV are pro level athletes going flat out, doing extreme workouts that a regular person has no chance of executing…unless they progress over time. If a person educates themselves on what they could become a part of and gives it a good try over time the “scariness of the unknown” goes away quite quickly as all the exercises and movements are pretty basic…there are a few tough ones but no one makes you do handstand pushups if you don’t want to on a given day. If you have trained for sports, been active in the weight room or just brave enough to jump in and learn from scratch CrossFit is just a better way to do things…it is more fun and engaging. I think the best way to teach people that there are better and more fun ways to exercise it to teach them when they are young and willing to try anything. I wish we had learned and tried some of the stuff we do as a kid…maybe I could do a decent handstand now. I wish my son did the Burgener Warm-up with a stick in gym class rather than play tag…learn young so you can participate until you drop dead.

Scary for me is jumping out of a plane or bungee jumping. Heights of any sort. CrossFit isn’t scary, but it is challenging, it will push your limits, and you will do things you never thought you would do. How we fix the misconception of scary, is to invite everyone to a free workout so they can see for themselves. Oh, wait…we just did that yesterday. 🙂

Happy Friday everyone. Kevin is quite gleeful about the workout today. Enjoy!!

I never found Crossfit scary because both my aunt and mother had had nothing but good things to say about it. I do get why people would be afraid though; if athletic culture isn’t something you’re familiar with or you had never really enjoyed sweating, it may feel like a bit of a leap. I agree with an earlier post that the pro-level gym junkies make us look a bit intense but I think that promoting the more social side (which CFM does really well) really helps to combat the image.

  6. What makes CrossFit so scary? How can we fix that?
I found crossfit very scary before I went. I always knew it was something I would enjoy and still took me 2 years to sign up for the prep after first considering it. I wish I had know about the varied levels of members. I think just knowing I would not be alone in modifying movements and that u can modify movements would have given me the courage earlier. I am so glad I finally sucked it up and walked through that scary door alone. I love it and have met amazing people. I think stressing that it helps people mentally as much as physically is also a great point. I have never been a part of any group so positive in my life. Thank you CFM

    10 Thrusters #20 for 3 rounds #15 for rest
    10 Ring Rows

    10 rounds

What is scary about Crossfit? Thursters!!

How do we fix it? Do 100 Thrusters in 20 mins and realize you’re still alive to say it. 🙂

  9. WU and Mobility x 1
Group EMOTM for 5 minutes – Running and Wallballs

    EMOM for 6 min
    3 Thrusters @ 50#
    3 Down ups

    AMRAP in 20 min
    10 Thrusters (40#)
    10 Ring Rows

12 Rounds plus 10 more Thrusters

I think the whole “you drank the kook aid” nonsense makes it scary…people are skeptical of something that people are really happy with…too many skeptics in the world today. This can be turned around with open nights, maybe live streaming some classes 🙂 in the end just keep up the great work! Thanks

  10. What makes CrossFit Scary?……WOD’s like today! Coming in today, I was afraid of this one and just wanted to get it over with.
How can we help with that?…..by doing challenging WOD’s like we did today. Coming through on the other side of a WOD like this and realizing that you didn’t die, and it was not quite as bad as you thought it might be, or that you did a movement or weight or number of reps (or whatever) that you didn’t expect you could do, then that’s the reward and you realize that it wasn’t as scary as you thought.

    20 Min AMRAP
    10 Thrusters @ 45#
10 Pull Ups (did 5 pull upx + 5 ring rows)
    Completed 8 Rounds + 10 thrusters

Kept weight light. First squating with weight in weeks and it felt pretty good. Also, my goal was to do all thrusters unbroken, which I did. More weight would not have allow this.

Fun morning. And I agree with Jackie’s observation about Kevin being gleeful for this WOD. 🙂

  11. Group EMOTM for 5 minutes – Running and Wallballs

    EMOM for 6 min
    3 Thrusters @ 65-75-85
    3 Down ups

    AMRAP in 20 min
10 Thrusters (85# for 2 rounds then down to 65# shoulder was not cooperating
    10 C2B Pull-ups

    8 rounds

The unknown is always scary, only way to fix it is to suck it up and go for it! Keep talking about how you feel and what CF brings to your life.
