Friday’s QOD

There was a recent article on Yahoo news the other day claiming CrossFit is a cult.

Is CrossFit a cult? Why or why not?

50 Squats, then
15-12-9
Power cleans (135/95)
Double unders
Then end with 50 squats

Compare to Feb.19/11

  1. CrossFit MIGHT not be a cult but people outside looking in will more then likely think it’s one. We are so passionate about our community and the sport that it will give them that impression. For me I say no, it’s not a cult. But then on the other side, some crossfiters are more then passionate, they think that anything else then CrossFit isn’t good enough or doesn’t work. P90X, Globo gym, Bowflex…. They will actualy laugh at these. Like :
    -Why all those mirrors…
-They spend half of their time at the water fountain…
    -Bicep curls…
-What’s up with all those pulleys…
The people that thinks this way in my opinion are in a cult.
Yes CrossFit might work for you but for some they like to workout by themself, at lower intensity, or watch TV while they run on the treadmill. I wouldn’t see myself going back to Gymnasia because I didn’t have the motivation. Believe me, there was some pretty fit people there so it worked for them. I have alot of respect for anyone that chooses any kind of exercise. If it makes you sweat and makes your heart pump faster, awesome. You’re already making more effort then half the people you probably know.

  2. If anyone starts asking me to drink orange kool-aid before a WOD(Jonestown Massacre) or ask me to murder people as a warm-up (Charles Manson) then I maybe forced to wonder if I am in a cult!!

Joanna and Kevin have not forced me to sleep with them yet, but he does demand that I pay direct deposit. Oh, oh, maybe I am in a cult!

    Great work Kevin.

Back to freddytown. Nice meeting everyone and nice seeing some familiar faces. Great atmosphere. Thanks again.

Is Crossfit a cult? Absolutely!!! But more importantly is that a bad thing?

Two key words that define a cult is ‘unorthodox’ and ‘devotion’.

Devotion is easy. Crossfitters can be extreme for fitnesses and diet. Definitely devoted.

Unorthodox is a matter of perspective. Society is getting fatter and unhealthier day by day. It’s the first time that the expected life expentency of people(our kid) is actually declining.

So if the fact we are going against the flow in society(exercise and heathy eating) I’m pretty happy to belong to this cult!

I liked this wod. My back got tired quick on the cleans though, I need to get it checked out.

QOD: Well we are a very devoted group, and some people may think we are bit strange when we talk about our Fran time, snatch and jerk, sanding callouses etc, and we refer to each other as family 🙂 So maybe? I’m happy to be a part of whatever we are.

Thanks for the push Tony. Wouldn’t have come close to that without you beside me.

Great job this morning everyone. Lots of fast times.

  7. Setting aside the religious aspects and connotations of the word Cult, you’ll find that yes, we technically fit the definition of a cult.

But, like Tony5 said, I’m pretty happy to be part of this one.
Plus at the end of the day, we can kick the asses of any other cult out there! *hehe*

First time doing Double Under’s in a WOD 🙂 Liked it even though I could only do a few reps at a time.

  9. Depends how you define the term.

I don’t believe that Crossfit is a “cult” in the context that most people would envision what a cult is. I see Crossfit more as a fitness movement. Yes, its has cult-like traits I guess (it has an ideology, their members are passionate, Crossfitters are welcoming ect…). But there’s a big difference between the two.

-Crossfit does not attempt to disconnect me from family members or friends who don’t share my passion for it.
-Crossfit does no offer me a simplistic explanation to all my problems.
    – I highly doubt I would be hunted down by Crossfit agents should I choose to leave. 🙂
-I can come and go as I please. I’m not FORCED to do anything.
-I’m pretty sure you can’t scale a sermon, or interpret a text or scripture.
-There is no WOD God who will rain down kettlebells and plates on the non-believers.
-Crossfitters are NOT narrow-minded, brainless zombies. We can think for ourselves.
    And so on….

If people want to call it a cult, let them. Call it whatever you want. The term has a negative stigma attached to it, but like Tony said, being labelled a cult is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s all about context. I also like Marc’s point on people on the outside looking in because it’s true.

Call me obsessed if you want. That’s a lazy person trying to interpret dedication…

    Today’s WOD looks awesome!

  15. cult/kəlt/
    Noun:

1- A system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
2- A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.

In my option, if you remove the ‘religion’ factor, Crossfit is almost by definition a cult. I don’t like to admit it but maybe that’s because of all the bad rep other religious cults create. It’s not like were going to commit a mass suicide to prove a point, right? Or are we?? LOL

Cult or not, we all believe in a POSITIVE idea and that’s health and fitness. If other people seek other methods for the same idea, I say encourage them instead of praising Crossfit as if it was the only solution.

    Peace!

    Oh yeah…

  16. Just read the Yahoo “cult” article. All I have to say about the disgruntled writer, is that his eco is a little too big for him. He quit crossfit because the girls in the class finished before him. Come on really, that happens to me a couple times/all week and I’ve been here for 7 months. There’s more I would like to say but let’s stick with the QOD for now.

After the first couple of months with CrossFit Moncton I though of it as a cult too. Everyone is on the same page and is obsessed with it. But in light of the QOD I had to take a step back and ask my self “what really defines a Cult?” The Priest even called the Catholic faith a cult so is it really a bad label? So I Googled “what is a cult” and the second definition is “A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.” Well for now we are a small group of people with practices regarded by others as strange, but I’m sure that will change over the years. I’m happy being apart of Crossfit no matter what it’s labeled and for those who try it but then give up, based on not getting crazy quick results, then hey we wont bag you to stay and wish you the very best.

One thing I love about CrossFit, is it’s the most non-secret secret society. Yes we workout behind closed doors and we call the gym a ‘Box’ but there is so much information, videos, free class, Saturday viewing opportunities as well as each affiliate web site is public for all to see. But they will never fully understand until they feel the sense of accomplishment we feel every class.

The article really does base info on extremes and some doctors, who would prefer to speculate about average Joes performing Olympic style weight lifting or pushing until puke, then to try it for themselves. To this I say thank you to all the CrossFit Moncton trainers who make sure we have the right technique before attempting heavier weights and critique us when we do.

We are not a cult because we have no religious affilitations to Crossfit. We are a group of dedicated people who are working hard and getting fit. Are we a little crazy and are our conversations somewhat limited to Crossfit? Yes, but that just shows our passion and passion can be a great quality.

  18. QOD: Crossfit could be considered a cult, minus all the negative aspects of cults. I’d use the term “cult-like following”.

I wouldn’t call it a Cult but definitely we are a community that care about each other bring it the best out of us, it doesn’t matter how long it take us to get there, you always feel the support behind in any achievement or struggle that you go through.
I have to say thanks to everyone for being there for me, when I started Crossfit I don’t think I was ready but I am glad I did it, my first couple months were not the best ones so I reached to my husband for support and he joined Crossfit in middle August that’s when I started to be more persistent and as all of you know the challenge came at the end of October, for some reason I got really excited when I read about it, because I knew that my eating habits were holding me back, sad part is that I knew that but I was not making any changes on my diet.
It has been over 3 months since we did the challenge and I’ve never feel this great, I’ve never practice any real sport but I have to say Crossfit makes me feel so competitive with myself, I love getting new PR’s, getting faster in some WOD’s, obviously I still have a lot of Goats to work on but I have plenty of time ahead of me, because CROSSFIT is for life!!
Thanks to my trainers for making sure I do the right movements and always been there if I have a question, maybe I do feel like I am part of a Cult hehe!! A cult that teach you to believe in yourself and that you can do things you never thought you were capable of, is nothing wrong with that, right?? 🙂
By the way today one year ago I did my first WOD ever!!!
Happy 1st Anniversary to me 🙂

    THANKS!!!

    1. Yay…Happy Anniversary! I still remember meeting you the first time, you have come a long way since my friend! Congratulations!

    2. Happy one year Elba! That’s a great accomplishment. I too can remember meeting you a year ago at the old gym……you were (and are) such an amazing person with a wonderful attitude. Keep up the great work! xo

    3. Happy first anniversary Elba!! It is an honor and a privilege to know and work out with you. The atmosphere in the gym changes when your smiling face walks through the door. Looking forward to a lifetime of wods with you!
And FYI, you look smoking hot! 🙂

    4. Happy Anniversary Elba!! Agree with you 100% that CF brings out the best in us and teaches us to believe in ourselves (which goes far beyond the workouts at the gym). You’re right, nothing wrong with that!!

    Decided to work on skills:
Kipping Pull-ups: Thanks to Kevin for helping with these. Managed to get 3 in a row and feel much better about the technique.
