    Does a simple question require a simple answer? If I say just controller, people confuse with controlling and I scare them off (usually men… lol!). I could say accountant, but it’s more than that…

    On my business card, it says:
    Controller of Norampac – Moncton and Norampac – Newfoundland
    Divisions of Cascades Canada ULC

    Basically, it means I supervise the accounting department (collection, payroll, accounts payables and purchasing), produce monthly and quarterly financial statements for the 2 divisions (now merging into one for 2012), make sure we put in place all the internal controls to avoid errors and fraud, produce and follow up on the budget, analyse our financial performance to make recommendationd for improvements and all other related projects.

    I got hired by the head office in Quebec in 2006 and “shipped” to St.John’s, Nfld for almost 2 years, then in Moncton almost 4 years ago now. It’s only in June of last year that we took over Newfoundland’s accounting from our Moncton office and I now overlook both plants.

    I love my job! It is very challenging. Sometimes it might be very stressful, and I admit it, I tend to be a little workoholic. Since I do Crossfit, it’s helped a lot to control my stress level and it’s getting me out of the office at a more decent time. Nothing better than a hard workout after a long hard day!

    Oh… also part of my job is being a pain in the butt for our sales manager, production manager (Pierre B), HR manager (Angie), Quality Manager (Jeff P) and production supervisors (including Tim R).

    I am a civil engineer at a consulting firm. I mainly do design and drafting on storm sewer projects, service connections to buildings, parking lot drainage, etc.

    1. Parking lot drainage eh Mario…..I need to set up a meeting with you! We are launching a new pervious concrete in atlantic canada, it’s a pretty impressive product. I’ll track you down at the gym sometime to discuss further.

  13. QOD: What pays the bills? Pharmacist. Pretty self explanatory. If you don’t know what a pharmacist is, you are doing something right….keep it up!

    What do I do with the rest of my time? Educator (have you seen the homework kids have these days?), taxi-driver (kids again), boo-boo kisser (mainly kids but sometimes Jeff), referee (most of you have met my kids, right? LOL)….you get the picture. Its all done for free, but the rewards are incredible. 🙂

  16. On a different note, anyone else starting to get really pumped about the coming 2012 Crossfit Open?

    Personally, excitement is building up quickly. I feel my wrists and lower back getting better and also getting out of a slump where every WOD just felt shitty. Still progress to be done with Double-Unders, hopefully 4 weeks will be enough.

    Also excited to see the turnout we are going to have, hopefully tons of new members will register, I know I didnt regret it last year.

    Long winded answer – I’m a Distribution Specialist for Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel hotels and resorts. I am responsible for “distributing” our hotels rates to various booking engines (websites, travel agent booking systems, internal programs ect). I also work with revenue/reservation managers at the hotels..basically I’m their bitch although I do get to tell them what they can and can’t do logistically or operationally. We (in our department) are considered the “smart” guys when it comes to our systems and are often the main point of contact when anything goes wrong.

    Coles notes version – I sit at a desk all day and answer emails.

    The other day/evening job I have and love is coaching/training all you beautiful people 🙂 and helping Kevin with all the behind the scenes fun (and sometimes not so fun but necessary) stuff.

  18. QOD I am a student finishing my Master’s degree in counseling (full-time) and a CF trainer (part-time). Once I graduate, I’d love to be able to marry these two passions together in a more balanced way, so I can help people make positive changes in their lives, from different, yet connected, standpoints. I’m also looking forward to having a salary again!! My student budget doesn’t lend itself well to a paleo nutrition lol

  19. QOD- I’m the Human Resources Manager for Norampac in their Moncton and St. John’s Newfoundland office. Most of my day is employee/labour relations, and then of course there is always the boring HR admin stuff. I travel every 6 weeks to Nfld, which is great except that they don’t have a crossfit there! I love my job – love my co workers!

    I work in the Distribution Services Department at Fairmont, Raffles Hotels International with Joanna. I am the Coordinator for the department. My job is to distribute the work load to each of the team members (to give Joanna work lol), to answer the phones, be a helpdesk for Travel Agents, and to do the odd projects.

    Evenings and weekends I help my husband, Troy, with the accounting part for our business (TMC Autoglass) so if you ever need a windshield give us a call! And in my “spare” time I am a personal chauffeur, teacher, maid, chef, etc for my kids…but I love every minute of it!!

  21. I’m a faculty member at Crandall University teaching in the busienss faculty. So the long version is that I teach, write, publish, and work on tons of committees. My background is in accounting (I’m a CA which makes my inabaility to count during a WOD pretty ironic!!) and so I teach a variety of accounting and financial communication courses to unsuspecting students….Scary hunh?

    So if anyone ever needs a smart graduating business student, co-op student or summer employee let me know – I’ll set you up with the best!

    Crossfit teaches you to set your goals, have a plan, stay focused , achieve your goals, then set them higher and do it agian.
    You set Your goals they will coach you to get there and give you feedback along the way.
    Crossfit will get you into the best “physical shape” you can get to.

    Me, I am a financial security advisor with Mason Financial/Freedom 55 Financial.
    I work with my clients to help them set their goals, where do they want to be in 2 years, 5, 10 or 20 years. Retirement, Semii-retirement, new house, new car, kids in university, health care plans, life ins., etc.
    Set your goals, build a plan, stay focused, achieve your goals, set the bar higher and do it again. I coach and support my clients to get them into the best “financial shape” they can be in.

    (ha ha i was just thinking i should change the name of my company from Mason Financial to Crossfit Financial, think it would work?)

  24. I’m a grade 9 and10 Immersion science teacher. Last year, I was asked if I would be interested in teaching one period of high school physical education. I wonder why they asked me? lol.. I graciously accepted to teach physed and I have to admit that it has been a wonderful addition to my day. For example, today, I played badminton today against my students and I even did the beep test for the second time this week!

    My overall goal is to become an an administrator. I have completed my Principal’s Certificate, but I just need to prepare for the 2-3 hour interview. Speaking of goals, I am going to complete the CF level 1 certification this year.

    My dream job would be to have my own CF Box that offers daycare and has a bistro/café. Who knows, maybe one day my dream job will actually be my real job.

    I am happily married and I spend a lot of time with my mother in law Lois; who happens to be one of the kindest people that I know. I am also a part time mom/aunt to my nephew Shannon. My family is very important to me.

    QOD…. I work at George Dumont Hospital as an Licenced Practical Nurse, I’ve done 3 1/2 years in Orthopedics surgery and now have been in Oncology treatments for nearly 2 years.
    I help people try to win the fight against cancer and I also try to help make the terminal cases as comfortable as possible in their dying days. I also do a lot of counseling with individuals or their families in need of a shoulder to cry on. I get a daily dose of reality every shift.
    Crossfit makes me stronger so that I can help others in need and for that I’m thankful. 🙂

    I’m the Quality Manager at Norampac. It’s a factory where we make corrugated boxes and packaging. I’ve been there twelve years and for the last seven I’ve been focused mostly on Safety programs while wearing many other hats and helping out where I can. I’m in transition now towards more involvement in quality and continuous improvement. I’m also a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and enjoy spending time with all of you!

    QOD: I am the Manager, Real Estate Development at Avide Developments. Never heard of it, you say… This is “real estate services arm” of Co-op Atlantic. In a nut shell we project manage, design, & build expansions, renovations, & new construction to the retail stores in the Co-op system and also provide these same services for construction of housing complexes, mainly targeted (but not exclusively) at co-op housing & affordable housing.

    Great QOD today Kevin. Really interesting to see what our sweat buddies do outside of the gym. I guess we all like to leave work behind when we walk through the door!

    I also look over 30 dealers in Atlantic Canada, Main and St Pierre et Miquelon who have the quoting interface of our software and keep them updated.
    Great job and nice to be able to do it all remotely from the Home Office.

    As for the QOD — I am the Sales Supervisor for Russel Metals located in Sackville. We are a metal distribution center (think lumberyard, but with metal). I’ve been with the Company for 16 years. Like everyone else I love hearing what everybody does when their not laying in a pool of their own sweat.

    QOD: A little late for the response but I’m a fairly new Quality Assurance Tester at Spielo, started in Aug 2011. Love my job, I test the VLT games for bugs. Stress levels drastically reduced from previous job at a contact centre. Speaking of stress, I started Crossfit about the same time as my new job, could be a big contribution to my results.
