A Hopper After-thought

Now that the Hopper is a few days behind us, I’m able to look back at the event as a whole. I’ve been to many other CrossFit competitions before, but the Hopper is truly unique. It doesn’t matter what place you finish. It doesn’t matter if you need to scale. It doesn’t matter what gym you’re from. It’s the positive energy that was literally booming through the doors that matters. It’s the sweaty high fives and the slippery hugs that matter. It’s knowing that you gave it everything you had and left it all on the floor that matters.

And at the end of the day, that’s what CrossFit is all about. The amazing community we have is unmatched. And I’m very proud to be a part of it.

Today is Change for Change. Bring $5 to switch up your workout.Β

3 rounds of:
50 Squats
7 Muscle ups
10 Hang Power Cleans (135/95#)

Compare to Dec.7/11

MC Dave, taking a quick lunch break. And a HUGE thanks to all of our other volunteers for their amazing work all day.

    Change for change: 5k run

    Time: 24:18

That’s 3 seconds slower than the last time I’ve done 5k in October 2011 (on another route).

In July 2011, I did 25:20, but I don’t think I did the same route. Last year, I think that I went up to McElroy on the last lap and this time I went up to Roy Brown St.

Either way, I’m a bit deceived by my time, I wanted to be under 24 minutes. Now I want to try it again.

    1. Vincent you did great!! and I know for sure that next time that you tackle this one it will be under 24 mins!!!

    2. 3 seconds off is nothing to worry about, and 18 seconds from sub 24 is really close. Your going to kill it next time, just consider today’s run practice.

    3. I agree with Trent. Don’t concern yourself too much with 3 seconds. Keep on practicing, Vincent. You will be recording a sub 24:00 in no time!!

    4. Thanks guys! It’s not so much the 3 seconds but the fact that it wasn’t under 24 minutes. I’ll try it again soon for sure. I think it’s all about strategy, and that’s where doing it again/practicing will help a lot. πŸ™‚

Ron, thanks for the coaching and also helping me with the scaling after my first round.

    1. You are welcome, by scaling the weight down you managed to do the lifts with better form and increased the intensity…….. Way to go Andy.

Good job 6 am class, you guys did great :)!!!

    1. Awesome Elba! I was happy to see you coming in at the end. I could see the determination in your face!

    2. congrats on your 5km run Elba.. but i have an issue with “pretty awesome”? I think you meant $#@^@#^$#@%$#@^@#^$%# AWESOME!!!

    3. Great job! I love those WODs that the time and score don’t matter to you…it is all about finishing!

    4. Ahhh…..a 5K virgin no more. Great job. It wasn’t that long ago you were telling me that you needed to work on your running….well you did it.

Goal was to close that crazy gap young gun Shawn has with his 140 reps. I was aiming for 120 but still got a tad closer and managed to get an extra round in compared to July 16th, also have a PR of 4 on Max pullups. All in all a good wod.

    1. Holy cow! What a great PR Trent! Congrats! I think you are crazy to pay $5 to do a WOD with running (after yesterday and the Hopper) AND pullups, but we’ll save that discussion for another day πŸ˜‰

      1. I couldn’t believe he paid to do this one again! Trent you are crazy, in a good way πŸ™‚

      2. I’m with Lora…I actually paid $$$ this morning NOT to have to do pull ups.
Great job Trent. Your pull ups looked great.

I can’t put in to words (and that’s something for me) what CrossFit has done for me! I’m going to be on a little high until the next workout kicks my ass.

And great job coaching Corinna. I really appreciated how you kept moving and offered tips while keeping everyone going strong!

    Great job nooners!

  16. I am not sure if anyone else is noticing the ability to workout in the heat. My tolerance of the hot weather has greatly improved since I started at crossfit this spring. If anyone had told me I would be able to run 5 km at 32 degree last year I would have told them they were crazy. Tonight I ran 5 km in under 30 minutes. That is something for me. Ran it in 27 minutes. I found my run tonight easier than the 2 kms with the burpes last night. I have to thank Crossfit for pushing me out of my comfort zone. Here is hoping that I can run the 10 km in Sept for the AWI wildside run in under an hour!!!

    1. Nice work PM. Kevin will be pleased that your out of your comfort zone….he thrives on that.

    2. Congratulations Paula-Marie! That is fantastic! One thing Crossfit is really good at is pushing people out of their comfort zone. I think Kevin says “get comfortable being uncomfortable”…or something like that. That truly is where the results are πŸ™‚

Change 4 Change WOD: The Rocky Gorge

I missed this one last Thursday and It looked like a lot of fun. I scaled it to half reps except I forgot on the first round and did 50 DU. My rope broke on the second round so I had to do a quick change. I also had to run all over the gym to get a station for the HSPU so I think I could have knocked off a minute, who knows. That was officially the closest I have been to “Pukie’s Den”. Also the first time I have tried HSPU and it wasn’t as bad as I thought.

3 rounds (Scaled to half reps)
    50 Double Unders
    40 AbMat Situps
    30 Kettlebell Swings @ 53#
    20 Pullups
10 Handstand Pushups (25+10Lbs plates with abmat)

I don’t care what you say Jeff, I think my head to toe Rogue ensemble made me look way faster!

      1. I think your stuff has to come from “Again Faster” to actually be faster πŸ™‚ On the other hand your new sox over your head on the HSPU were fabulous!! Great job on a tough wod any way you cut it!

    1. You did really well…that is a tough WOD, no matter how good you look doing it πŸ˜‰ LOL!

Seriously though, great job for your first time doing HSPU. Glad Pukie stayed at bay…he was lurking for many people today…

  24. I haven’t been on here much today (very busy!) but I wanted to mention that’s a great picture of Dave, and he did an AWESOME job MC’ing the Hopper. He was amazing, and was really good at getting the crowd energized. Really hope he’ll come out again next year!

    1. I second that! Dave did a fantastic job on Saturday. Great energy. Kept things moving and the crowd was engaged the entire time. πŸ™‚

    Clean & Jerk – split

Great OLY class again – I’m a fan!! I think the clean mechanics are starting to come (at least I have Kevin and Joanna in my head while I’m lifting πŸ™‚ ) now I have to work on speed. Not much extra weight vs last time but the split jerk was sooo much easier and I finally see that what K says is true – you can lift more weight with the split. That’s a great feeling since the over-my-head part of any lift is always the hardest (and scariest) part. No question I’ll be there again next week.

95-115-135-145-155-165-175-185-195 (failed on clean)- 195 (failed on jerk) the limiter for me on the move is front squat, squats need more attention, been avoiding much of them due to knee concerns but like the tshirt says “if ya can’t fix it with squats, you’re probably gonna die” lol.. Daily squats here I come!

Awesome job everyone tonight, some big weight thrown around, my partner Frankie through up an easy looking 205.. Awesome Frankie!

    1. Those are some crazy heavy cleans, Jeff! Well done πŸ™‚ Hard to believe that your limiter tonight was front squat. That just goes to show you how HEAVY the weight was that you were lifting. Impressive!

    2. Thanks Jeff, you did great, you had great form, you’ll be up to 225 once your knee gets better πŸ™‚
