Mark Ludvigsen — The 32-year-old native of Rothesay, N.B., moved to the United States with his family at age seven. The avid rugby player graduated from Virginia’s College of William & Mary and worked as a bond broker at Keefe, Bruyette and Woods. He and his wife of three years, Maureen, lived in Manhattan. Mark was working on the 89th floor of the south tower, but managed to leave a message for his mother at 9 a.m. “Mother, now don’t you worry. I’m in the other tower. I’m fine and I’ll call you later,” he said.
He is one of the 26 Canadians killed as a results of the terrorist attack.

  2. Some more information about Mark —

Mark Ludvigsen was a man of many nicknames. Squid, in high school, because he was small. Lud, in college and into the workplace, because Lud was more descriptively fitting of the six-foot-four recreational rugby player that Ludvigsen developed into. Flanders because even as a bond trader at the boutique investment banking firm of Keefe, Bruyette & Woods Inc., Ludvigsen remained the nicest guy anyone could ever meet. Just like Ned Flanders of The Simpsons fame. He was known as a “goofball” with a heart of gold who didn’t know how handsome he was.

Friends and family remember what they call “Ludisms.” The way Lud would mangle the lyrics of post-game rugby songs, not infrequently having to “shoot the boot” — drink beer from his rugby cleat — as penance.

His sister remembers him as a brother she adored, even though he nearly took her eye out when taking a back swing with a sawed-off golf club when he was seven. Steve Stanziale laughs at the memory of Lud’s wedding day, in which the kilt-wearing Lud mooned Stanziale’s mother “wearing nothing underneath that skirt of his.” Mike Tolkin laughs recalling how hard his friend worked on the rugby pitch, as Lud tried to compensate for his “thick legs and slow feet.”

Ludvigsen was a driving force behind the New York Athletic Club Rugby Team. He not only carried his weight at his second-row position, but he formed a recruiting network in which he befriended players from around the world, helping them get visas and find employment so they could pursue rugby in New York.

Wife Maureen Kelly had one request for mourners at her husband’s funeral: Don’t wear black. Tell silly jokes. Drink champagne. Laugh.
